You can't ever be like "SHE SUCKS BECAUSE HER MUSIC SUCKS AND AGHHHH". I mean, you can not like her music because it's not the kind of music you like, but criticizing is pointless and kind of uncool. She makes music. She apparently writes her own music too, and you can't say that's dumb. Whatever anyone makes, whether it's a bad piece of art or a shitty book, they're making whatever the hell they wanna make and that's all that matters. (This philosophy can also be applied to people's weight/way they dress yay feminism.) So I'm glad she is using her creativity and making music. That's awesome. And if you want my opinion, I am pretty okay with her music. It's fun to listen to and dance to.
However, her lyrics can be nasty, especially to other girls. As you may well know, she hates on girls a lot in her songs, mostly because of jealousy. It's just kind of mean.
Also she can be not gay-friendly sometimes."But you are not the kind of boyWho should be marrying the wrong girlI sneak in and see your friendsAnd her snotty little familyAll dressed in pastelAnd she is yelling at a bridesmaidSomewhere back inside a roomWearing a gown shaped like a pastry"
"So go tell your friendsAnd the whole cheerleader thing:
That I'm obsessive and crazy
That's fine, I'll tell mine
You're gay"
"She wears high heels, I wear sneakersAlthough I do like it when she's all "You're such an ass I'm gonna write a song about how much better I am without you", it comes at a price. And that price is being unpleasant. I like to show how independent I am without stupid people as much as the next girl, but she writes these songs that can seem downright spiteful and immature. Such as "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". She goes so far as to mock his voice and sigh, saying "Ugh, this is EXHAUSTING." Seriously? How would you feel if you were being mocked in a hit song?
She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers"
Another example of her immaturity in her music:
"It feels like a perfect night to dress up like hipstersTHIS IS A SONG ABOUT BEING 22 YEARS OLD. WHY DOES IT SOUND LIKE YOU ARE 17. WHY TAYLOR WHY.
And make fun of our exes"
I understand that her music is targeted towards younger people. And yes, I understand she would lose fans if she actually started signing about real things that happen to 22 year old women. But one day you gotta grow up. You can't stay stuck in the same year forever with your music, or else it's not nearly as relatable and good. Madonna even grew up, and not even in a subtle way (best examples: "Like A Virgin" and "Like A Prayer", the latter being about a blow job). So I just wish she would sing about things that are actually happening, not the G-version of everything.
I feel like she is trying to make a transition into more adult content but it hasn't been enough. Like "I Knew You Were Trouble", kind of risqué for her because GASP. SHE IS KISSING THAT MAN WITH TATTOOS. And she is in his hotel room. But she's bouncing on the bed. When I saw that video I automatically thought of Ride, except Ride is better, primarily because it's a better story and better written and and Lana is a goddess etc., but also because Lana isn't sexually repressed in her songs and she talks about drinking and "bad things" like that. I understand that Taylor isn't trying to be the hot siren and bad girl that Lana is, but I think Taylor needs to understand that singing about love and sex and stuff is real. Like jesus gurl you are 22 and have many boifriendz you can sing about what things are really like. Not only about sex but other things that she does. I'm guessing Taylor's life isn' just all in-love-kissy-so-cute-poetic. I'm guessing she (as many 22 year olds do) gets into stuff. Things aren't all shiny and perfect. Life sucks and shit happens. I wish she would sing about those and not polish them until it isn't real anymore. This GIF properly executes my point:
A perfect example of this is a comment on Cola, a VERY adult-themed song (I know I won't stop talking about Lana but cut me some slack, she's my guardian angel).
"Lana is classy by the way she handles herself in the public eye and in front of her fans. You don't see her dressing trashy or snorting coke on the corner. She sings about her life and real things. All of that, to me at least, is classy."
Taylor doesn't do that and it's kind of unnerving. After a while people have to grow and change. Even Justin Bieber went from cute guy in the bowling alley to guy with half-dressed babes and fast car. So there's my opinion of Taylor Swift. Please don't hate me.

AMEN! This is exactly my problem with Taylor. Her songs are catchy and fun, but so much of what she says in her songs bothers me. And I get that boys and relationships can be shitty and/or not end well, but even when she seems to have had a nice relationship, it's like she needs to whip out at least one revenge song. It's fine when you have a couple sprinkled through but now it's just getting old.
The director of Ride also directed the video for I knew you were trouble, thats why they are similar. I do also prefer Ride though!
I've never really been a fan of taylor, I'm just not into her music, also the slut-shaming thing she does put me off. She kinda acts like a special snowflake, "I'm not like other girls"-attitude, which sucks. But damn, that was a good song and a good video. I'll admit that i like that song and her music is fun to dance to and all, but I won't go out of my way to listen to it.
Thank gosh someone wrote this article. Kudos to you!

I haven't heard many of her songs, therefore i don't have a strong opinion about Taylor, but i just wanted to say THANK YOU (or your tumblr ) for introducing me to The Lizzie Bennet diaries ♡ it's the best thing ever, makes me want to rewatch the P&P TV series of 1995 because...i Love any movie starring Colin Firth :)
I know how you feel about Taylor. In my opinion she's weird and her lyrics are annoying and always the same and mean, as you said, but her music is lovely to listen to. Ignoring her lyrics (it seems like she WANTS to be dumped by boys, so she can write new songs and earn money) Oh, and about her I Knew You Were Trouble videoclip... it was her most strange thing yet. I thought of Rihanna's We Found Love when I saw it, and I thought: just NO Taylor...
You are an amazing writer you know? XX
hahaha a little secret...there's not a huge difference in maturity between 17 and 22 ;)
I agree with this SO MUCH. (Esp. because Lana Del Rey is one of my idols.) I feel like her songs would be better if she actually sang about things that happen to someone her age and about the problems in life instead of sugarcoating everything. Also, the slut-shaming/other bad things that you mentioned are unfortunately true about her music.
That is so funny that her new video reminded you of Lana Del Ray's Ride! Because I totally thought that as well, especially with the "poetic" beginning! haha! Interesting take on her music and image, I agree but I think I like her with a grain of salt. I admit some of her songs I just love to be completely self-indulgent with, as they are relatable.
